Ideas to Entertain a Bored Toddler

by Stephanie Cummins

"It depends where we are, but singing songs always works for us. We usually sing “Old McDonald” and I ask him what animal we should use for each verse. If he’s bored long enough, we get into some pretty obscure farm animals, like frogs, owls, lizards, and Elmos! It never matters what sound Elmo makes to him, which is good because I have no idea either!" ~Rachel

"My favorite trick came from my sister-in-law and I have variations depending on the time of year. In the summer I give my toddler a large bowl of soapy water and a bowl of plain water and get her to wash her toys outside. She loves washing down her tricycle, slide, outside toys and giving different dollies “baths”. In the winter, I set her up at the kitchen sink (or you could use a bowl on the floor) and she washes vegetables. I’ve used this one to help introduce new vegetables (she is more interested in trying them since she washed them), colors and counting. And as an added bonus all of my veggies for the week are clean!" ~Shauna

"If the weather is nice, I love to put my toddler into my Mei Tai carrier

and take her for a walk. The rhythm of my walk relaxes her, the scenery

entertains her, and getting out of the house is refreshing for both mom and

baby!" ~Amy

"In the looooong winter months, I'm always looking for ways to keep my almost 2 year old entertained. One of the things that keeps her busy lately is playing with pasta. I pull out all the Tupperware and plastic ladles, spoons, etc and she has a blast pouring the uncooked pasta from bowl to bowl." ~Jillian

Next time your toddler needs something new to do, try one of these neat ideas to help spark their imagination.  You will have your little one’s sweet disposition back in no time flat!
